Ali, Coffey named to B1G All-Tournament Team

Both Portland Thorns draftees Amirah Ali and Sam Coffey were included in the 2021 Big Ten Women’s Soccer All-Tournament Team but neither Rutgers nor Penn State were able to win the tournament.

Coffey and the Nittany Lions exited the tournament in the first round at the hands of Michigan. Ten days before their Big Ten Tournament clash, Penn State traveled to Ann Arbor and lost 2-0 to the Wolverines in their penultimate match of the season. Michigan defeated the Nittany Lions by the same margin but with a different scoreline.

The Wolverines scored in the 10th minute and doubled their lead in the 21st minute. Sam Coffey set up Ally Schlegel in the 86th minute but the Nittany Lions’ hope of a comeback was dashed when Michigan made it 3-1 in the final minute of regulation.

Ali and Rutgers made a run to the Big Ten Tournament final but were similarly beaten by the Michigan Wolverines. The Scarlet Knights advanced to the semifinals after their 1-0 win over Wisconsin.

Ali scored a brilliant goal to make it 2-0 against Iowa in the 82nd minute which propelled Rutgers to the Big Ten Tournament final. Ali reached the milestone of 100 career points with the goal and climbs to third on Rutgers’ all-time points chart.

The Scarlet Knights welcomed the Wolverines to Piscataway, NJ and Michigan dealt Rutgers their first loss since their 1-0 loss to Georgetown on Sept. 12 and their third loss this season.

Despite the loss in the Big Ten Tournament Final, Rutgers were awarded a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Scarlet Knights will host Bucknell at Yurack Field on Nov. 13.

Penn State also got into the NCAA Tournament and will host Monmouth in the first round.
