Angelo State soccer team punches ticket to LSC Tourney finals

No. 6 seed Angelo State University advanced to the LSC Women’s Soccer Tournament championship match after knocking off No. 7 seed Texas A&M-Commerce 2-0 in the semifinals Friday night in Dallas.

ASU improved to 14-4-2 and Commerce dropped to 10-7-2.

The Belles will face top-seeded Dallas Baptist at 1 p.m. Sunday and it will be carried live on the LSC Network. It will be a rematch of the LSC Championship Tournament finals last spring. ASU won that match 1-0 in overtime.

Freshman Mariah Griffin scored the first goal against Commerce on an assist by Maddi Kyle in the 66th minute.

In the 79th minute, Gabby Villagrand found the back of the net off an assist by Griffin.

ASU out-shot Commerce 17-12, including eight shots on goal. The Lions only had one shot on goal.

In eight matches at the LSC Tournament dating back to 2018, ASU has not given up a single goal.

On Thursday, ASU senior Avery McNeme was selected as the LSC Midfielder of the Year for the fourth straight year, and senior teammate Kira Miller was named Goalkeeper of the Year.
