Cathedral wins WWG tournament

WALNUT GROVE — New Ulm Cathedral went 4-0 and won the Westbrook-Walnut Grove tournament on Saturday.

Syd Helget had 39 kills and 24 digs and Megan Haala had 19 kills, nine aces and 26 digs. Lily Franta had 14 kills, seven aces and 24 digs and Jenna Hotovec finished with 27 kills and 32 digs. Emily Schommer finished with 56 set assists, eight kills and 17 digs and Annie Edwards had 34 set assists and 22 digs.

Cathedral (8-1, 2-0 in Tomahawk) hosts Sleepy Eye on Tuesday.

Wabasso takes 4th at Montevideo

MONTEVIDEO — Wabasso finished fourth at the Montevideo tournament on Saturday.

Avery Carlson had 20 kills and 28 set assists and Kelsey Frank had 19 kills, 19 digs and 27 set assists. Audrey Johnson had 39 digs and 10 aces for the Rabbits.

Cedar Mountain competes at Montevideo

MONTEVIDEO — Cedar Mountain picked up a victory in four matches at the Montevideo tournament on Saturday.

Nadia Meyers finished with 42 digs and Megan Sandgren had 15 kills and 31 digs. Hailey Hollar had 21 kills on the day.

MVL drops 4 at WEM tournament

WATERVILLE — Minnesota Valley Lutheran dropped four matches at the Waterville-Elysian-Morristown tournament on Saturday.

Sam Dalueg had 18 digs, 40 set assists and Gabbie Bleick had 18 digs and eight kills. Ella Schlei had 10 kills and six blocks and Morgan Paulsen had 14 digs. Abbie Riederer had 25 digs and 13 kills and Lili Mohror had 19 kills. Kaylee Hunter finished with 26 digs and 24 set assists.

MVL (2-5) hosts Springfield on Tuesday.

Madelia competes at Sleepy Eye

SLEEPY EYE — Madelia competed at the Sleepy Eye volleyball tournament on Saturday.

Brook Lensing had 26 kills and Ashlynn Sweet finished with 23 kills. Corban Tatro had 23 digs and Dora Facundo had 50 digs. Ashley Sorenson finished with 82 set assists.

Madelia (3-6-1) hosts Alden-Conger on Tuesday.

Girls’ soccer

Mankato West 7, New Ulm 0

NEW ULM — Mankato West shut out New Ulm in a nonconference girls’ soccer match on Saturday at New Ulm High School.

New Ulm had 14 shots on goal but couldn’t find the back of the net. Ellie Dake finished the game with 10 saves in the first half and Arianna Dreyer had 10 in the second half.

New Ulm is at Mankato Loyola on Tuesday.

Women’s volleyball

ST. PAUL — The Martin Luther College volleyball team split its Saturday doubleheader in the cities, dropping the first match 25-14, 23-25, 25-19, 25-14 to Buena Vista at Hamline, but defeating Whitman College 12-25, 27-25, 25-21, 25-21 to close the day at St. Catherine.

BVU 3, MLC 1

MLC took a set from Buena Vista University (BVU), but fell short in a 3-1 defeat Saturday morning.

After losing the first set 25-14, the Knights came back from a late deficit to take the second game 25-23.

The Beavers took control from there, however, as they hit .295 in the third set and .448 in the fourth on the way to the win.

Kelsey Birschbach led the Knights on the attack with 13 kills to go with 13 digs. Kate Aswege led MLC with 20 digs

MLC 3, Whitman 1

The Knights shook off a bad opening set to score their first win of the season in the second match against Whitman.

MLC dropped the opening game 25-12, but saved a pair of set points on the way to a 27-25 second-set win to tie the match at one.

The Knights never looked back from there as they finished each of the next two sets strong to win the match.

Abigail Winkel played well for the Knights in the middle, tying Birschbach for the team lead with 11 kills while also recording a team-high five blocks.

Hannah Willems also made her presence known in the middle with four blocks (including two solo blocks), while Aswege once again led the team with 24 digs.

MLC moved to 1-6 on the season following the split. The Knights will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to St. Catherine for a match scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
