Burrell’s Season-High Saves Not Enough Against UCI

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Despite a season-high 11 saves from goalkeeper Flavia Burrell, the CSU Bakersfield women’s soccer team was unable to slow the UC Irvine Anteaters on Thursday night. A red card saw the Roadrunners go down a woman and down a goal just before halftime and the Anteaters tacked on four second-half goals for a convincing road victory at the Main Soccer Field.

“The red card changed the game, our approach, and what we needed to do,” said Sebastian Vecchio, Bakersfield’s fourth-year Head Coach. “We weren’t good enough on the day and when you play a quality team like that and you don’t show up and play, you get a 5-0 scoreline. Credit to them; we just have to go back to the training ground and get better.”

Bakersfield went toe-to-toe with UC Irvine for over half an hour on Thursday night. In the 37th minute, UC Irvine put pressure on the `Runners and forced Burrell to come off her line to make a save. The rebound fell right to an Anteater and a would-be goal was blocked by the hand of CSUB defender Kayla Edwards. The play resulted in a red card for Edwards and UCI’s Scarlett Camberos netted the penalty kick to put her squad ahead 1-0.

Down a woman, Bakersfield slowed UCI for the next 14 minutes until Camberos scored her second goal of the night at 50:41. Another 19 minutes elapsed, but the UCI pressure continued pouring down on Burrell and her back line. Camberos earned a hat trick in the 70th minute after beating the `Runner defense and finishing a fine shot.

Seven minutes later, UCI tallied two more goals in a 90-second span to cap the 5-0 offensive outburst.

CSUB will host one final match on the Main Soccer Field this season on Sunday, Oct. 24. Bakersfield will celebrate a small group of `Runners on Senior Night as CSUB welcomes Hawai’i for a 5 p.m. (PT) match.

Looking ahead to Sunday’s Senior Night match against the Rainbow Wahine, Vecchio said he is excited for his team’s chance to finish strong: “We still have six seniors that we are going to honor, so it will be a great night. The energy will definitely be there on Sunday and hopefully we can put up a better performance than this.”
