Cowgirls return home Sunday to take on Northwestern State

LAKE CHARLES- After a three-game Texas road trip, the McNeese Cowgirls (7-3-1, 4-1-0) will return home to face Northwestern in a battle atop the Southland Conference standings.

Series History                                              

Historically, the Cowgirls sit at 14-16-5 against the Lady Demons, however, the Pokes are 6-3 in the last nine matchups.

Last Time on the Pitch                                            

The Cowgirls are coming off a 2-1 road victory against Houston Baptist last Thursday. Rachel Young scored both goals for McNeese, and Mariah Ruelas played an important role in the match. 

Scouting the Lady Demons                                             

Northwestern currently sits atop the SLC standings with a 4-0 conference record. They are led by conference point-leader Olivia Draguicevich who scored four goals in their last match, a 4-0 win over TAMUCC. 

Offensive Prowess                                             

The Cowgirls rank first in a bevy of categories amongst the rest of the SLC. Drew Fitzgerald‘s team ranks first with 76 total offensive points. The next closest team is Northwestern St. with 49. The Pokes also rank first amongst the league in total goals (26) and assists (24). 

Senior’s Anna Watson and Havana Johnson each have nine points on the year (4g, 1a) which slots them both in fourth-highest league-wide. 

Senior defender Keely Morrow and sophomore midfielder Megan Mielke are tied with four others for the conference lead with three assists. 

Fresh and Ready                                          

Freshman goalie Jackie Kelly has been impressive during her first season in the blue and gold. All she has done since being called upon to start is record four shutouts, allow the fewest goals per game in the conference (0.557 – 35th across D1), and have a save percentage of 84.8 (first in SLC). She was nominated for the McNeese – Raising Canes player of the week last week. 

All fans are encouraged to come out for “Super Sunday” and support the Cowgirls. Young Poke fans will be able to come out and participate in the superhero mask decorating festivities.
