Drury Women’s Soccer Plays Ashland In NCAA Tournament

The Drury women’s soccer team will travel to Ashland, Ohio to play in the first round of the NCAA Division II National Tournament.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— The NCAA announced Monday that the Drury Panthers will play host Ashland in the first round of the Division II National Championship Tournament on Thursday at noon (Central) in Ashland, Ohio.

Drury is seeded seventh in the Midwest Region, while Ashland is the number two seed in the Midwest Region. The national bracket is a 56-team field and features eight regionals played at 16 different sites. It is a single-elimination tournament.

The Panthers are 15-4-1 and earned an automatic berth as the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament champions. Drury finished in second place in the standings, won the league title game on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over Southern Indiana. Their national tournament appearance will be Drury’s first since 2007 when the Panthers won their first and second-round match-ups before falling in the regional finals.

Ashland is ranked 15th in NCAA-II and they carry a 15-1-3 record. The Eagles won the regular season and the tournament championship in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. Drury’s game against Ashland will be only the second game between the two programs. They last played one another on Sept. 2, 2010, with the Eagles winning 2-1 at home.

The winner of the Drury-Ashland game in the opening round will advance to the regional semifinals and play the winner of third-seeded Ferris State (15-3-3) and number six seed Saginaw Valley State (13-5-2) in Ashland, Ohio.
