UnitedHealthcare Hopes Apple Fitness+ A Day Keeps The Doctors Away
UnitedHealthcare has become the first health insurance company to provide its members a free year-long subscription to Apple Fitness+, the premium fitness program centered around the Apple Watch.
Apple Fitness+ launched in Dec. 2020 encapsulating 10 training types and spanning a wide range of duration (5-to-45 minutes) and discipline (HITT to yoga). The library includes 1,200 workouts recorded in 4K ultra high-definition (UHD) and, beginning next week, the list will expand further with: Pilates, guided meditation and a new link preparing users for snow season that will be led by Olympic gold medal-winning skier Ted Ligety.
Other new features announced for later this year include an expansion to 15 countries with subtitles for six languages, as well as group workouts where up to 32 users can sync up on the same live session via Apple’s SharePlay technology.
Of particular note is the movement toward more support for mental health. Fitness+ previously offered “Mindful Cooldowns” but now has added sessions of up to 20 minutes in nine guided Meditation themes. The watchOS 8 update also changes the Breathe app to Mindfulness with a new option called Reflect — in which the user is prompted to seek calm and a positive frame of mind.
The UnitedHealthcare offer begins on Nov. 1. The insurance company previously launched UnitedHealthcare Motion, an incentive program that rewards users with out-of-pocket medical expense coverage by meeting various movement benchmarks with their wearable device.
“We are very excited to work with UnitedHealthcare to bring this offer for Apple Fitness+ to millions of people who are looking to get and stay motivated to live a healthier lifestyle,” Jay Blahnik, Apple’s senior director of fitness technologies, said in a statement. “With our welcoming trainer team that lead a variety of workouts fueled by music that will keep you going from start to finish, the new guided Meditations coming next week, and the metrics from your Apple Watch right on the screen, Fitness+ has many ways to keep you active no matter where you are on your fitness journey.”
