Gambino ’22 scores twice, No. 17 women’s soccer advance to second round of NCAA tournament

The nationally ranked No. 17 Continentals advance to the second round of the 2021 NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship tournament after defeating the Johnson & Wales University Wildcats 3-2 in the first round at William Smith College in Geneva, N.Y., on Saturday.

The Continentals were ranked third in Region I by the NCAA and are now 14-2-2 overall while the Wildcats finish their season 17-4-2 overall and were ranked eighth in Region I by the NCAA.

Hamilton out-shot Johnson & Wales 21-8 with 13 being on goal. Cat Gambino ’22 recorded two shots on net which both resulted in goals, Olivia Zubarik ’25 had two shots on net with one goal, Rose McCullough ’23 also had two shots on goal.

Caity Smith ’23 made two saves and the Wildcats’ Carly McCrumb made ten.

Hamilton struck first in the third minute when Rylie Mutton ’23 crossed the ball into the middle of the 18-yard box from the right side where Gambino took one step forward and kicked it in mid-right out of the keepers diving reach.

Gambino scored again in the 12th minute off a long pass from Zubarik down the left side that she kicked into the back of the net midair.

Zubarik scored the Continentals third goal three minutes into the second half when she picked up a pass that was played down the middle and kicked it into the top left corner from the top of the box.

Johnson & Wales scored in the 80th minute when they ran the ball down the left side into the box and crossed it to the middle where it was tapped in low past Clare Robinson ’25.

The Wildcats scored again in the 84th minute when they played the ball down the right side and crossed it into the middle of the box and was shot in bottom left.

Hamilton will face off against the No. 3 William Smith College Herons in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Sunday at 1 p.m. at William Smith’s Cozzens Field.

The Herons are 17-1-1 overall and defeated John Jay College 9-0 in the first round of the tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Hamilton is 4-26-6 against William Smith College. The last time the two teams met was on Oct. 2,2010 and it ended in a 0-0 tie.
