Hastings College women’s soccer picks up big win over College of St. Mary

HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) – The Hastings College women’s soccer team had a big matchup against College of Saint Mary as it pitted the No. 4 and No. 5 teams in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. The Lady Broncos looked solid with its 3-1 victory taking over the No. 4 spot in the GPAC and sets them up for a good chance to host in the opening round of the conference tournament.

HC had a good chance early in the 6th minute when Carolyn Hopkins (SR/Lincoln, NE) had a great look but her shot bounced off the crossbar to keep it a scoreless game.

In the 17th minute, Dulce Lopez (SO/Hastings, NE) sent a perfect through ball to the feet of Jacqueline Gilbert (SR/Chandler, AZ) as she put her shot into the net for the 1-0 lead. Hastings again had the majority of the opportunities in the first half but the score remained 1-0 into the second half.

Things then got interesting as the Flames tied the game in the 57th minute when Kylie Anderson sent a cross into the box where Courtney Kosch put the shot away.

It didn’t take long for the Lady Broncos to answer though as Eva Dunker (SO/Blair, NE) sent a ball into the box where the keeper mishandled the ball where Lopez would put the ball into the open net for the 2-1 lead.

HC then put the game away when Dekota Schubert (SO/Castle Rock, CO) put a nice through ball to Gilbert as she scored her second goal of the game in the 78th minute.

The Flames picked up a few more shots but the back line and Lauren Gahn (JR/Stockton, CA) made sure the score would remain 3-1.

Hastings out shot the Flames 20-to-12 and 10-to-9 in shots on goal. Gahn picked up a career high eight saves.

Hastings improves to 10-4-1 on the year and will be back in action Saturday Oct. 23 hitting the road to take on Northwestern with kick off set for 2:00 pm in Orange City, IA.
