The relatively tough stretch Florida State endured in the last week in women’s soccer likely speaks more about how good the Atlantic Coast Conference is in this sport than about FSU’s chances in the upcoming tournament.
The Seminoles, who opened the season with 14 straight wins, did draw two matches and lose to Duke in a seven-day stretch. But they retained the No. 2 seed going into the tournament, which means they don’t play until Friday against No. 6 seed Wake Forest at 8 p.m.
And they are getting three players back into the fold: defender Gabby Carle and midfielders Maria Alagoa and Heather Payne, all of whom were out due to international team commitments.
FSU comes into the ACC tournament with a 14-1-2 record, and is built around a defense that has shut out opponents eight times this season. Though they haven’t played the Demon Deacons this season, the Seminoles have won three straight games over Wake Forest going back to 2018.
Wake (15-4) surprised third-seeded Duke 2-1 in the first round of the tournament on Tuesday, winning on a Duke own goal in the game’s 84th minute. Shayla Smart leads the Deacons with 10 goals this season, while Sofia Rossi has seven.
