Indiana State Soccer Hits the Road for Match at UNI

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State women’s soccer will travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa for a matchup against UNI on Saturday at the UNI Soccer Field. The match will kick-off at 2 p.m. ET.

Last Time Out

The Sycamores picked up their first conference win of the season with a 4-1 rout of Evansville on Sunday at Memorial Stadium. CeCe Wahlberg started the scoring with her third goal of the season in the 38th minute to give Indiana State a 1-0 lead going into the half.

Early in the second half, Mackenzie Kent put the Sycamores up 2-0 as she got a pass from Isabella Hunter and floated a ball over the goalie who had come out of the box for her third goal of the season.

Indiana State would make it 3-0 in the 63rd minute when Chloe Tesny took a pass from CeCe Wahlberg and sped past the Purple Aces defense, beating the keeper with her second goal of the season.

Evansville ended the Sycamores shutout bid in the 71st minute when Alex Eyler got open just outside the box and scored on a feed from Emily Ormson.

With less than two minutes to play, Kent put the finishing touches on the Sycamores victory with her second goal of the game after evading multiple Purple Aces defenders. That was her team-leading fourth goal of the year.

Maddie Alexander made six saves for Indiana State to seal the 4-1 win.

Sycamore Stats and Notes

Freshman forward Mackenzie Kent leads the team with 10 points (four goals, two assists). Her four goals are tied for third-most in the MVC.

Junior midfielder CeCe Wahlberg ranks second in the MVC with 23 shots on goal and third with 36 total shots. She currently ranks 25th in the nation with a .639 shooting percentage.

Wahlberg’s 120 career shots are tied for sixth-most in school history and her 63 shots on goal are tied for third-most.

Katie Yankey, Sasha Thompson and Kent are all tied for the team lead with two assists each.

Sophomore goalie Maddie Alexander has 98 career saves which ranks eighth all-time in school history.   

Kent was named the MVC Freshman of the Week for the second time this season. She earned the award for her performances against Drake and Evansville where she totaled 10 shot attempts and two goals.

The Opponent

Northern Iowa enters Saturday’s contest with a 4-7-1 (1-2-0) after picking up their first conference win last week with a 2-1 overtime win over Illinois State.

This will be the 24th matchup between the two schools with Indiana State leading the all-time series 11-9-3. The Sycamores were victorious in the most recent match, beating the Panthers 2-0 at Memorial Stadium.

The Panthers are led by freshman forward Lauren Heinsch who is tied for the conference lead with six goals this season. Her 14 points rank third overall.

Freshman forward Ashley Harrington is second on the Panthers with eight points this season. She has recorded four assists which is tied for second in the MVC.

UNI is coached by Bruce Erickson who is in his 27th year as a head coach at the collegiate level. He owns a career record of 278-233-44. In 2017, Erickson led the Panthers to a program record 14 wins and their first appearance in an MVC Tournament championship game.
