11 Nov Lacee Bethea has whirlwind week capped off with special honors
It is to no one’s surprise that Richland County athletes are excelling at an exceptional rate in college athletics.
This week was no different as three Richland County products had weeks to remember including Lexington’s own Lacee Bethea who brought home some hardware.
Let’s check in with Bethea as well as Madison’s Taylor Huff and Mansfield Senior’s Angelo Grose in this week’s Campus Tour.
Lacee Bethea – Bowling Green Soccer
It was a big week for Lexington’s own Lacee Bethea. After scoring a goal in a 1-0 win over Buffalo in the Mid-America Conference women’s soccer semifinals, Bethea struck again with a game-deciding goal in a 3-0 win over Kent State to help her Bowling Green State University Falcons win the 2021 MAC championship making it the fourth consecutive season and the sixth time in program history, the Bowling Green State University women’s soccer program has won the Mid-American Conference Tournament title.
For her efforts, Bethea was named the MAC Tournament Most Valuable Player for the Falcons in just her sophomore season. But the awards didn’t stop there.
On Monday, Bethea was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week and earned honorable mention honors on the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week. For her two goals in the two tournament games.
On Wednesday, Bethea earned another huge honor and was named the Mid-American Conference’s Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the first time in her career after scoring those two goals and carrying a 3.36 cumulative grade-point average as a criminal justice major proving she can get it done on the pitch and in the classroom. She was the only female in the MAC to earn the honor as nominees must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and must have performed well during the previous week’s competition. She checked both of those boxes emphatically.
Bethea now has seven goals on the season as BGSU (11-6-3, 8-2-1 MAC) won both the league regular-season and tournament crowns, and will head to Ann Arbor to face Michigan in the first round of the NCAA Championships on Friday evening.
Taylor Huff – Tennessee Soccer
Madison product Taylor Huff helped the Tennessee Lady Vols to the Southeast Conference women’s soccer tournament championship by leading her team to three tourney wins. Last week, the Vols beat Ole Miss 3-2 before avenging their only loss of the season beating Arkansas 3-0 in the title game. Huff played a total of 165 minutes in those two games and finishes up her freshman season as an SEC champion. The Vols are 18-2 on the year and drew Lipscomb in the NCAA National Championship tournament.
Angelo Grose – Michigan State Football
During a 40-29 upset loss to Perdue, Mansfield Senior product Angelo Grose recorded three tackles for the Michigan State Spartans. Grose now has 59 tackles on the season as the Spartans still remained in the Top 10 of the College Football Playoff Rankings despite their first loss of the season. The Spartans host Maryland on Saturday.
Note: college cross country had the week off as it prepares for regional meets this week.
