20 Aug Lisa Weiss leaves Aston Villa Women for VfL Wolfsburg
Goalkeeper Lisa Weiss has left Aston Villa Women after a mutual termination of the her contract and returned to Germany with VfL Wolfsburg.
The 33-year-old made the most WSL appearances of any Villa player during the 2020/21 season, as well as helping the club avoid relegation on the final day of the campaign.
A German international who has previously played over 200 times for SGS Essen, as well as spells at Duisburg and Lyon, Weiss has signed a contract with the She-Wolves through to 30 June 2023.
Weiss told vfl-wolfsburg.de: “I’m happy to be returning to the Women’s Bundesliga after three years abroad. VfL Wolfsburg is a top club in European women’s football and I’m really looking forward to the tough challenges that lie ahead of us this season. I know some of my new team-mates from my time at Essen and in Lyon, but in any case the whole squad has given me a really warm welcome.“
Ralf Kellermann, sporting director for VfL Women, said: “Obviously with Almuth Schult currently being injured, I’m delighted that we were able to get a highly experienced keeper like Lisa Weiss at such short notice. With all the challenges of competing in three competitions and playing twice a week, it’s good to be well-stocked in the goalkeeping department.“
