Massasoit women’s soccer wins Region 21 title, faces Delta next

Following last Monday’s matchup with Holyoke Community College, Jim Stapleton could finally exhale.

The Massasoit Community College women’s soccer coach watched the Warriors, which only have 13 players on the roster, seize an opportunity that doesn’t come around often.

Behind a second-half goal from star forward Kiana Fernandes of Taunton, Massasoit stayed undefeated at 11-0 by taking down Holyoke for the fourth time this season with a 1-0 victory to claim its first Region 21 championship since 1999. The win came with even more history as the Warriors advanced to their first NJCAA National Tournament since 1989.

“I never usually feel pressure, but I did for these kids in the last couple of weeks,” Stapleton said. “I wanted to get them there because we’ve been the No. 1 dog, leading the league all the way through and the worst thing would be not to get there. So this was the year if there was ever a chance without CCRI (Community College of Rhode Island), with Holyoke being a little bit weaker than normal, this was the year that a 13 women team could somehow find a way and we have the right balance.
