09 Nov Ohio State gets at-large bid to NCAA women’s tournament
Ohio State received an at-large selection for the NCAA women’s soccer tournament on Monday and will travel to Virginia Tech for a first-round matchup on Friday.
This will the Buckeyes’ 15th NCAA tournament appearance and 11th in the past 13 seasons. The Buckeyes are 13-13-2 in the tournament.
“We’re super excited and thrilled to extended season,” said OSU coach Lori Walker-Hock. “Our players have done a lot this year. They have done a lot with a little, so they’re super excited.”
Ohio State is 9-8-2 overall and 4-4-2 in the Big Ten this season. The Buckeyes are ranked No. 39 in the RPI. Senior Kayla Fischer leads the team in points with 18 (6 goals, 6 assists) while freshman Kailyn Dudukovich is next with 17 points on a team-leading seven goals. Dudukovich and Fischer were named third-team All-Big Ten.
Last spring in the NCAA tournament, the Buckeyes opened with a 5-1 win over Stony Brook in the opening round before losing in the second round to eventual champion Santa Clara.
Virginia Tech was is 11-5-2 and finished eighth in the ACC. The Hokies have an RPI ranking of 29.
This will be the second meeting in the NCAA tournament between Ohio State and Virginia Tech. The teams met in the second round in 2015, with the Buckeyes came winning 1-0. All-time, this will be the fifth meeting between the two teams, with the most recent coming in 2016. The Buckeyes have won three of the previous four meetings.
