Purple Eagles Defeat Marist, Earn No. 3 Seed in MAAC Tournament

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – Niagara (13-4, 7-3) closed out the regular season with a 3-1 win over Marist (5-6-3, 4-4-2) Wednesday afternoon, earning the No. 3 seed for the upcoming Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship.

Game Recap

• Niagara got on the board in the 15th minute when junior Florence Vaillancourt found the back of the net for her first goal of the afternoon.

• The game would remain tied heading into the break. The Purple Eagles took 11 shots in the first half, with two ending up on target.

• Niagara would keep the pressure on to start the second half of play, resulting in a goal from senior Zoe Janes, her first of the season.

• Janes’ shot ricocheted off the left post and found its way into the back of the net, giving Niagara a 2-0 lead. Emma Bough was awarded the assist on the play, her eighth of the season.

• Marist would cut the Purple Eagle lead in half in the 76th minute of play when Deanna Lomino headed the ball into the net on a corner kick from Autumn Smith.

Maia MacLean would find Vaillancourt right in front of the net for Niagara’s third goal of the game. Vaillancourt collected the pass from MacLean and tapped it into the lower right side for the goal.

Niagara Notes

• Niagara was the first team this season to score more than two goals against Marist.

• The Purple Eagles improved to 8-0 when leading at the break and 9-0 when scoring first.

• With her 12th and 13th goals of the season, Vaillancourt moves into eighth in the single-season record book. She also moves into sixth in single-season points with 16.

Zoe Janes, who came into the contest with just two shots all season, matched that total this afternoon, finding the back of the net for the first time in her career.

• Janes became the 10th Purple Eagle to score a goal this season.

• Junior Clara Bornet got the start in goal for the Purple and White, her sixth of the season. She matched her season-high with four saves.

Up Next

• The Purple Eagles who with Wednesday’s win earned the No. 3 seed in the upcoming MAAC Women’s Soccer Championship and will take on the No. 6 seeded Iona Gaels this Sunday, Oct. 31 at Niagara Field. Game time is to be determined.
