Riddle & Gallagher Garner Patriot League Weekly Awards

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After extending its undefeated streak to seven games (5-0-2) with a 1-0-1 mark this past week, the Navy women’s soccer program was highlighted in the weekly awards announcement by the Patriot League and the NAAA on Monday. The duo of Alexa Riddle (Fr., Tomball, Texas) and Mattie Gallagher (So., Gilbertsville, Pa.) garnered honors from the Patriot League as the conference’s Offensive Player of the Week and Goalkeeper of the Week, respectively. In addition to her nod from the Patriot League, Riddle was selected as the NAAA Athlete of the Week presented by Northrup Grumman. She shares the accolade with Jamal Glenn of the Navy football team for his efforts on defense versus No. 2 Cincinnati.

Suiting up in both contests for Navy this week, a road tilt at Howard on Monday and another road game at Holy Cross on Saturday, Riddle played 60-plus minutes at forward for the Mids in each. After Navy tied Howard, 0-0 to start the week, Riddle netted the game-winning goal for the Mids in Worcester. The freshman scored in the 16th minute to put Navy ahead in the eventual 1-0 decision. Tied for the lead in the Patriot League in total points with 19 (7 goals, 5 assists), Riddle has tallied two game-winning goals in a 10-day period for the Mids. This is the third straight week that she has been honored by the Patriot League after garnering the conference’s rookie accolade on Oct. 11 and sweeping the offensive player and rookie honors last week.

Gallagher, a sophomore goalkeeper, helped the Mids clinch a spot in the Patriot League Tournament with 90 minutes of shutout soccer on Saturday versus Holy Cross. Facing four shots on goal by the Crusaders, Gallagher earned her fourth clean sheet of 2021. She has now allowed one or less goal in each of the past five games for Navy, all Patriot League contests. For the year, Gallagher has posted an 8-5-2 record, a 1.20 goals against average and a .782 save percentage over 16 appearances. She has now been recognized as the Patriot League’s Goalkeeper of the Week three times this season after previously earning the nod on Aug. 30 and Oct. 19.

Riddle, Gallagher and the Navy squad will close out its regular season on Wednesday with a home contest versus Lafayette. Kickoff between the Mids and Leopards is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
