02 Nov Two River Hawks Earn America East Major Awards
BOSTON, Mass. – The UMass Lowell women’s soccer team adds to its brilliant season with a pair of River Hawks earning America East Major Award honors, as announced by the league on Tuesday afternoon.
Freshman Ioanna Papatheodorou (Nea Erithraia, Greece) was named the unanimous winner of America East Rookie of the Year and earned America East Striker of the Year. The freshman leads America East in goals (10), points (20), and game-winning goals (6). Papatheodorou’s six game winners this season also has her tied for third in the country.
“It’s an honor for Ioanna to be recognized by our peer coaches and receive this major award as a top player in the conference,” said Head Coach Mira Novak. “For her performances this year Ioanna fully deserves this. She was leading scorer this year and is tied for third in the nation in game-winning goals.”
For the second consecutive year, Senior Dunja Mostarac (Belgrade, Serbia) has been named Defender of the Year. Mostarac has played 1508 minutes, starting all 16 games for the River Hawks this season. The senior has also tallied one goal for two points on the year.
“Dunja for the second year in row is proved that she is a top defender in the league,” said Novak. “I feel fortunate that I have the pleasure of watching them grow every day in training and love the passion they have t for the game and for this team. She’s been a top performer this season and fully deserves the award. I also want to recognize the team that helped them to achieve these awards as well. We have a great group here that pushes each other to succeed.”
The major award announcement comes a week after the league announced that both Mostarac and Papatheodorou earned America East All-Conference honors. Mostarac was named to the America East All-Conference First Team and All-Academic Teams. Papatheodorou was also named to the America East All-Conference First Team and All-Rookie team.
