San Francisco 49ers running back Jeff Wilson Jr. will miss the start of the 2021 season after undergoing surgery on his injured knee Friday. General manager John Lynch said Wilson injured his knee last week following practice and a weightlifting session, and an MRI determined he tore his meniscus. Wilson, who led the 49ers in rushing last season with 600 yards and seven touchdowns on 126 carries, is expected to miss 4-6 months. Wilson also had 13 catches for 133 yards and three TDs … J.D. Roberts, the second coach of the New Orleans Saints and the man who made Archie Manning his quarterback, has died. He was 88. Roberts died Monday, according to the Memorial Park Funeral Home in Oklahoma City. New Orleans finished 7-25-3 under Roberts, who was instrumental in the Saints’ decision to take Manning with the No. 2 overall pick in the 1971 draft.


Canada breaks through in worlds

Adam Henrique had two goals and an assist and Canada beat Norway, 4-2, in the world hockey championship for its first victory in four games. Connor Brown added a goal and two assists, Andrew Mangiapane also scored, and Darcy Kuemper made 13 saves in Riga, Latvia. Canada moved into a tie with Norway for sixth place in Group B. Thomas Valkae Olsen and Mats Rosseli Olsen scored for Norway. In the other Group B game, Kazakhstan ended first-place Germany’s three-game winning streak with a 3-2 victory, with Pavel Akolzin breaking a tie on a breakaway with 4:18 left. In Group A, Britain beat Belarus 4-3 for its first regulation victory in the event since 1962, and Russia topped Denmark 3-0. Liam Kirk scored twice for Britain. Ben Davies and Mark Hammond also scored, and Ben Bowns stopped 33 shots.


Timme returning to Gonzaga

Gonzaga men’s basketball forward Drew Timme, who led the West Coast Conference in scoring last season, announced he will return for his junior season with the Bulldogs rather than pursue professional options. The 6-foot-10-inch Timme scored 19 points per game last season and also led the WCC in field-goal accuracy at 65.5%, good for third in the nation … Michigan freshman center Hunter Dickinson entered the NBA draft while giving himself the option of staying in school. The 7-foot-1, 255-pound Dickinson earned second-team All-America, Big Ten’s Freshman of the Year, and all-conference honors last season … The Senior Bowl and the NFL will hold a pre-draft combine for top prospects from Historically Black College and Universities next January. The inaugural HBCU combine, scheduled for Jan. 28-29, 2022, will be similar to the NFL combine with interviews and on-field and medical evaluations. The Senior Bowl is scheduled for Feb. 5 … Robert Morris University is cutting its men’s and women’s Division 1 hockey programs, effective immediately.


Mickelson-Brady to team up again

The next edition of The Match will feature PGA stars Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau along with NFL quarterbacks Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers. The celebrity fundraising competition will be held at the Reserve golf course at Moonlight Basin in Big Sky, Mont., on July 6 and will be televised on TNT at 5 p.m. Players will have open mics and be able to talk with other players and commentators during the modified alternate shot match play event. Mickelson, winner of this year’s PGA Championship, will be paired with seven-time Super Bowl champion Brady to take on 2020 US Open champion DeChambeau and Rodgers, a Super Bowl champion and three-time NFL MVP. Mickelson and Brady lost the second edition of The Match to Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning in May 2020 … Danielle Kang and Inbee Park made themselves right at home at Shadow Creek in the Bank of Hope LPGA Match Play. Kang, a Las Vegas resident, routed Albane Valenzuela, 7 and 6, in the most lopsided match to start group play. The second-ranked Park, also an area resident, birdied to win the par-5 18th to tie Jennifer Chang. Top-ranked Jin Young Ko edged Natalie Gulbis, 4 and 2 … Kiko Francisco Coelho, 18, and Leopoldo Herrera III, 19, won the US Amateur Four-Ball championship at University Place, Wash., birdieing the first extra hole to beat Brendan MacDougall and Sam Meek, and earn entry into the US Amateur.


Sky’s Wade lodges complaint

Chicago Sky coach James Wade filed a complaint with the WNBA after an official referred to him in a derogatory manner during Tuesday’s night’s loss to Atlanta. Wade, who is one of two Black male head coaches in the league, also implied his team is targeted by officials with “ridiculous” calls. Chicago was called for 22 fouls while Atlanta had 21. … Liberty forward Natasha Howard, the 2019 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year, will miss at least four weeks after suffering a sprained MCL in her left knee … C.J.
