10 Oct Women’s Soccer Falls to Towson, 1-0
ELON, N.C.— The Elon University women’s soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to Towson on Oct. 10.
“It’s difficult for me to be disappointed today because we played very well,” said head coach Neil Payne. “The only disappointment I had was that we couldn’t a win for our magnificent seniors. But we’ll go again. This group is resilient. We’ll get to training. We’ll fix a couple things and improve the product and get back to work.”
-Despite the teams combining for 13 shots in the opening half, neither one was able to score.
-In the 19th minute, Carson Jones fired the lone Phoenix shot on target of the half past the goalkeeper, but it was deflected at the last second by another Towson player to keep the match scoreless.
-Less than 10 minutes into the second stanza, the Tigers were awarded a penalty kick following a foul on Katie Lowe. Towson’s Jasmine Hamid took the shot, which made it into the bottom right corner of the net to give the Tigers the lead.
-The Phoenix had a 3-0 advantage in shots on target in the remaining time, with Makenzie DePriest-Kessler leading the way with two attempts and Kayla Hodges following with one. However, the Tigers held on to earn the win.
-DePriest-Kessler paced the team with a season-high two shots on goal and four shots to match her season best, followed by Kayla Hodges with two shots and one attempt on goal.
-In goal, McKenna Dalfonso (6-5-1) finished with one save on the day.
-After today’s game, Elon stands at 6-5-1 (1-2-1 CAA) on the season, while Towson improves to 7-3-1 (2-1-0 CAA).
-Prior to the match, the Phoenix honored its seven seniors: Sarah Bevington, Jasmine Bryant, Hodges, DePriest-Kessler, Samantha Dominguez, Abby Fusca and Lily Harkes.
Elon will travel to Boston, Mass. to face Northeastern on Sunday, Oct. 17 at 1 p.m.
