Women’s Soccer Heads to Notre Dame College Looking for Momentum

Wheeling, W. Va. – The last time the Wheeling University Women’s Soccer team (3-4-1, 2-3-1) faced off against Notre Dame College they scored their first win against the Falcons in program history. On Wednesday, the ladies head out on the road, looking to carry that same success from Bishop Schmitt Field to South Euclid, OH. With kick-off scheduled for 4 PM.

Wheeling is coming off a game that went to double overtime on Sunday when they tied with Alderson Broaddus 1-1. It was a wet day for soccer, but neither team was able to outdo the other despite the wet conditions. Wheeling got on the board in the eighth minute of the game, and Alderson Broaddus followed up with a goal in the 36th minute accounting for the only two scores in the game. Wheeling had some opportunities late in the game but couldn’t get any of their shots to land on net.

Leading the offensive attack was senior Braedynn Porter, who had six shots on the day, putting three of those on goal. She had a few chances towards the end of the game and nearly won it in the 86th minute, but she couldn’t find the back of the net, forcing overtime. The lone Cardinal goal on the day was scored by junior Shiann Thomas, her first goal of the season, but that is all the Cardinals could muster before securing the tie.

Despite finishing in a tie, senior goalkeeper Mikayla Yarwood turned in one of her best performances of the season. She had a lot of work to do in net, making a season-high 10 saves on the day while allowing just one goal to sneak through. She made half of her saves when it counted in overtime and helped give Wheeling a chance to pick up a win all afternoon long.

The tie moved Wheeling to 2-3-1 in Mountain East Conference (MEC) play, and they sit in fourth place in the MEC North Division. They sit two conference points behind third-place Notre Dame College, and a win tonight would put Wheeling all alone in third place in the division. With the top three teams from each division making the MEC Championship tournament, tonight’s game could go a long way towards determining Wheeling’s playoff chances this season.

The Match-up

In their storied history, the Cardinals and Falcons have met up 17 times, with Wheeling going 1-16 in those match-ups. However, their lone victory against Notre Dame College came in their first match-up of this season at Bishop Schmitt Field. In road games against the Falcons, Wheeling is averaging right around a goal per game. They head to South Euclid, Ohio, tomorrow in hopes of earning a season series sweep.

In their first meeting of the year, Kenadee Burgoyne got the scoring started with two first-half goals, but Notre Dame College responded with two of their own to tie the score at 2-2 at halftime. However, Talynn Debartolo would end up being the hero of the game when she knocked in the game-winning goal with 14 minutes to go. Wheeling would hold on for the 3-2 win and scored their first win in program history against the Falcons.
