Women’s Soccer Opens the Season with a 2-1 Overtime Win vs. Drexel

Villanova, Pa.- In the 96th minute Chloe O’Neill found classmate Niki Molina on a cross pass places right in front of the goalpost to secure the Wildcats first win of the season.  Villanova defeated Drexel 2-1 in the season opener on Thursday afternoon at Higgins Soccer Complex.

It was the Dragons who got on the board right in the 36th minute when Casey Touey got a shot on goal that was saved by Villanova keeper Megan McClay.  The save bounced back into play and right in front of Gabrielle Perrotto who tapped it in for the first goal.

A pair of newcomers for the Wildcats scored the game tying goal.  Francesca Yanchuk dished it to Megan Donnelly, who got her shot to fall in in the 69th minute.  In the second half the Villanova offense took 14 shots and five corners.

In overtime it was Molina who netted the golden goal on a dish from fellow senior O’Neill to secure the win. 

McClay finished with five saves on the day and picked up the win in goal. 

Next the Wildcats will travel to Delaware for a game Sunday night at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.  Kickoff is schedule for 7:00 P.M. and can be see on FloSports.
