Women’s Soccer to Host Providence and Creighton This Weekend

A Goal in the 4th Minute Lifted the Wildcats over Creighton, 1-0

Omaha, Neb.– An early goal and strong defense was enough for Villanova to defeat Creighton on Thursday night, 1-0.  With the win the Wildcats will host a first round BIG EAST Tournament game this Sunday at 1:00 P.M.  The opponent of the match is still to be determined, with DePaul and Marquette having to postpone their game scheduled for today to tomorrow afternoon due to snow.

It was Brice McInroy who netted the game winner in the opening minutes.  McInroy was set up on a cross pass at the top of the box by Makayla Stadler.  McInroy was able to get a strong shot off that went past the Bluejays keeper to make the score 1-0.

Villanova had a couple others good scoring chances in the first half.  Niki Molina got a shot off that was saved and Shaye Seyffart minutes later sent a shot just high.  Creighton had all three of their shots on goal in the first half and they were all saved by Rebecca Gartner.  The Bluejays had a shot in the final seconds of the first half that hit the post and went out to make the score 1-0 at halftime.

The Wildcats defense was locked in in the second half not allowing Creighton to get a shot on goal.  It was McInroy who took Villanova’s best shot in the second half, but it was saves by a Bluejay to make the final 1-0.

This is the first time since 2014 that Villanova has qualified for the conference tournament and it has been since 2012 that the Wildcats have hosted a BIG EAST Tournament game at Higgins Soccer Complex.

Admission to Sunday’s game is free and can also be seen on BEDN.
